April is BPM’s Season to Celebrate!
It’s April and we have AfroPoP and PitchBLACK on our minds all month!!
Afropop: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange returns for its 15th season continuing to showcase the rich diversity of the African diaspora through art, music and culture. From the magnetic movements of dancers in Can Your Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man and the Waters, to the inspiring journey of musician and performer Angelique Kidjo’s rise to worldwide popularity in Queen Kidjo, this season offers viewers a unique insight into the creative process of our artists. Visit our website to watch every episode on demand, or tune in to WORLD Channel or PBS.org every Monday this month for new episodes.
In addition to Afropop, we’re also excited to host the 2023 PitchBLACK Forum & Awards in person again. This is our annual pitch competition where documentary and immersive content creators pitch their projects for a chance to win production funding and support to bring their visions to life. But that’s not all. This year’s awards ceremony is hybrid and will be hosted by comedian “Sir Alex” Robinson, featured on Kevin Hart’s “Hart of the City.” In addition to announcing the winners of the forum and the 2023 NCU Fellow, the awards ceremony will include a fireside chat with BPM Trailblazer Yoruba Richen conducted by Brittany Luse, host of NPR’s “It’s Been a Minute”; and a special tribute to BPM’s founder Mable Haddock. Finally, to make the pot even sweeter, you can watch an online retrospective of Richen’s films from April 24 – May 8.
